Once again Ziva knows loss.

A pre-het story.

Written: October 2009. Word count: 300.

"No!" She drops to her knees by his body.

Her hands move to the bullet wounds attempting to staunch the flow of blood. But it is useless. There is too much damage.

He is dead. Tony DiNozzo is dead.

It has happened again. A man she loved is dead.

First it was Ari, her half-brother, who died by her hand.

Then it was Michael, her lover, who died by the hand of the man she now kneels by.

Now it is the man she had once shared a bed with. The man who annoyed her. The man who saved her. The man she never told how she felt.

Tears slip from her eyes, falling onto his body, mingling with the blood.

She feels gentle hands on her shoulders; a soft voice speaks to her. "Come along, Ziva my dear. Get up. You can't do anything for him." The same gentle hands begin to guide her to her feet.

She tries to fight; to pull away. She does not wish to get to her feet. She wishes to stay where she is. But for a man in his mid-sixties, Ducky is surprisingly strong. Against her desires she is pulled to her feet and into Ducky's arms.

"Hush, my dear. It will be all right."

She knows it will not be all right. It cannot be all right. Nothing will ever be all right again. How can it be? Once more she has lost the man she loves.

Suddenly she jerks awake, tears flowing from her eyes.

It was just a dream.

Tony is not dead.

She is not being comforted by Ducky.

It was just a dream.

But it is enough to make her decide: she will not wait any longer. In the morning she will tell Tony how she feels.
