WISHING FOR THE SUN

By

Nikki Harrington

Tommy's life seems to be a mass of cloudy days.
A pre-het story.
Written: December 2007. Word count: 250.

When Deborah left him for Simon, Tommy felt as though the clouds would never lift.

Then he married Helen.

When Helen left him following her miscarriage, Tommy felt as though the clouds would never lift.

Then Helen came back.

When Helen was killed, Tommy felt as though the clouds would never lift.

Then he saw Barbara.

He really saw Barbara.

He looked at her.

His partner.

The one person who had kept him sane. Who had been there for him. Who had stood by him throughout everything.

He looked at her.

And he knew.

He knew he'd fallen in love with her.

He knew too it hadn't been an overnight thing.

He knew that he'd been in love with her for quite some time.

But she didn't seem interested in him, not like that.

Not as anything other than a working partner.

As each day came and went and still he hadn't found the way to tell her, to say something, even to invite her out for dinner, a drink, the clouds got darker and darker, heavier and heavier. They descended until Tommy felt as though they would never lift.

Barbara was the only one who could lift the clouds from him. From his life.

The only one who could bring the sun into his life.

And all he could do was to wait.

Wait and wish.

Wait and wish and hope.

Wait and wish and hope for the day when the sun would once more come into his life.

You Brought It Back is the sequel to this story.
