The silence stretched between them.

Finally, Silver broke it. "Well, say something."

Steel looked at his companion. "What do you want me to say?"

"Something. Anything. Steel, I've just told you I love you. Surely that warrants some response, even from you."

Steel continued to stand in silence.

Silver threw his hands up in the air, turned his back on Steel and walked away.

Steel stood in silence and watched him, bemused by his fellow element's actions.

Silver returned. "Then do something."

Steel blinked. "What do you want me to do?"

"Something. Anything. Hell, Steel, hit me. Use that incredible strength you have on me. Freeze me. Walk away even. But do something. Say something. Don't just stand there and look at me as if -" Hastily Silver stopped speaking.

"As if what?"

To Steel's further bemusement, a faint colour touched Silver's cheeks. //I was going to say as if you weren't human.//

//Which I'm not. Which you're not.//

"I know that. But some of us are more 'human' than others."

//Why?//

"Why what?"

//Why do you love me?//

Silver blinked, opened his mouth and then closed it again without saying a word.

//Don't you know?//

"Steel, you can't rationalise everything."

Steel just looked at his companion.

Silver shook his head and again threw his hands up in the air. "Forget it, Steel. Just forget it. Okay? It was stupid. I was stupid. I thought . . . But it doesn't matter what I thought. It was stupid of me. I should have known. I'm sorry, Steel. Sorry to have bothered you. Sorry to -"

With ease, Steel reached out his hand, caught Silver's arm and pulled him towards him, put one hand behind his head and put his mouth on Silver's.

//Is this what you wanted me to say?//

The silence stretched between them.
