ALL TOO MUCH

The first story in the Lost And Found Series.

Set during Deliverance.

Ducky gets a phone call.

An established relationship story.

Written: February 2009. Word count: 200.

"Once again, I am so very sorry, Dr. Mallard."

"Thank you." Carefully Ducky replaced the handset, closed his eyes for a moment and sighed.

It was too much.

It was one thing too many.

Coming as it did after being forced to relive Afghanistan, and only that day hearing scuttlebutt that Jethro had fathered a son in Columbia, the news that his beloved mother had finally passed away was more than he could bear.

Moving slowly, stiffly, like an automaton, he took off his white coat, put on his woolen overcoat, picked up his hat and walked out of the building. He didn't even acknowledge the Security Guard's comment. He didn't even hear it.

He just walked and walked.

He knew he must be crying because people kept staring at him and then quickly looking away; plus his cheeks were cold. But he couldn’t do anything about the tears. They didn't trouble him; he wasn't even really aware of them. They fell. He walked.

And walked.

And walked.

It started to get dark and the temperature plummeted, but still he walked.

Still the tears flowed.

Still he walked.

Still he wasn't aware of anything other than his need to walk.
